Hsin Yeow’s thoughts: Terrified
Elaine stole the show from us.
We were doing our job to entertain the guests with classics selected by Edwin and Elaine, including some of my favourites (That’s All, Overjoyed and So Close).
But it was over the moment Elaine took the stage.
She was luminous, and even though she lacked the confidence that Judy, Matthew, Feri and I had onstage (honed performing at hundreds of weddings), it added to her charm.
She just sang. The song was Terrified, and it was a ‘surprise’* performance for the groom. Her beautiful voice took us completely by surprise, that’s for sure. Edwin was so overwhelmed, he went on stage to give her a hug.
The other highlight of the wedding was the hilarious speeches given by Edwin’s close friend. From him, I learnt Edwin’s middle name (Albertus), how he got Elaine drunk (so he could send her back) and how meticulous Edwin could be (he keeps receipts!)
Congratulations Elaine and Edwin! My best wishes for you both!
*Elaine had dropped by another wedding to speak with me, and I suggested that she play the piano or sing for Edwin. She hesitated, but Edwin jumped in and asked her to sing. Elaine agreed, and even arranged a rehearsal with Matthew. Matthew had this to say, “With a little polish, she could be a professional singer!”
