Hsin Yeow’s thoughts: It Had To Be You

It helps if you have funny friends. To liven up a wedding, I mean.

Grace, Pei Joo’s friend of two decades (yes, that’s right, they knew each other in primary school), impressed us all with her language prowess by speaking in impeccable English and Mandarin. At the start of her speeach, she described her friendship with Pei Joo and listed her many positive traits (her generosity of spirit, intelligence, etc). Then she took a jibe at Aloysius, “Many say a woman would be shy around someone whom she finds attractive. Knowing how Pei Joo behaved when she met Aloysius, I could only conclude she didn’t find him attractive at all!”

Two of Aloysius’ friends took the stage after Grace, and they kept people rolling at the aisles with well-timed punchlines. One began drolly, “As the best man, I’ve been told I should be saying good things about Aloysius. Which means I shouldn’t be telling stories of wanton drinking, relentless skirt-chasing, and waking up on the roadside after being robbed!”

Another quip I remember: “Aloysius, I heard from Grace that she’s looking for someone whom she will love, cherish and look up to. I’m sorry to say, Grace, that, on account of the height difference, you just have to be satisfied with the first two!”

Another way to liven up a wedding is to hire a live band, of course. Hui Bing, Sharon, Boon Chye and I performed a mix of English and Mandarin numbers to warm response from the guests. The table next to us, in particular, applauded after every song!

Congratulations, Pei Joo and Aloysius! Thank you for having us and we wish you happiness and bliss in your journey ahead!
