Bevlyn’s Thoughts: Je t’aime Je t’aimais Je t’aimerais (I Loved You, I Love You, and I Will Love You)
I am always a potpourri of excitement and nerves when it comes to singing for couples with French spouses. It’s one of those things in life which you really enjoy yet feel a bit nervous about, and that was exactly how I feel about this wedding with the French chansons. I’m truly grateful to be given the opportunities to learn new songs and perform them, because well, how many chances do I get that here?
The band performed the 1st march-in song “L-O-V-E” to welcome Xiang Wen and Frederick, and boy, I was blown away by the white-washed gown with pretty laces that covered her shoulders and arms! The relaxed couple walked up the stage to the rostrum and said,
Xiang Wen, “I’ll like to thank everyone for coming, and we just want to say…”
Frederick, “Bon Appetit“!
(laughter from guests)
And with that the band kicked off the event with “Dream a little dream”. The 4-piece band provided a rich musical background to my vocals, and it was truly an enjoyable performance with Ein Ein on piano, Wah Yong on double bass, and Ivan on saxophone.
The fathers’ speeches definitely passed the humour bugs around the ballroom that afternoon. Xiangwen’s father recalled feeling like the father character played by Steve Martin in ‘Father Of the Bride‘ when Xiangwen told him she was going to get married – it felt to him like her 6-yr old daughter was telling him that she was about to get married. To him, every parent will always think of their children as young, no matter how old the child really is… just like how his mother still reminds him at times to brush his teeth… 😀
Frederick’s father gave an impromptu speech in French, with Frederick doing a spontaneous translation (I smelled fun even before they began because I was wondering if Frederick was really going to translate everything the father said). Frederick’s father recalled that the family liked Xiang Wen very much and accepted her very fast into the family when they first met her, and he hoped that Frederick will treat her right, especially since he had been a ‘hard single’ (dur celibataire) in all his 30 yrs of age. (Yes Frederick actually obligingly translated that too! Hands down to him!).
But my favourite has to be from Xiang Wen, who said to her parents “Thank you for tahan-ning all my ex-boyfriends, and accepting the one who truly matters..” Isn’t it so true for all or most of us?
Thank you Xiang Wen and Frederick for inviting our band to be a part of your wedding! We wish you all the bliss and joy, and many bountiful children to come. Felicitations!

Hello Bevlyn,
Want to thank you for a wonderful performance! So sad I didn’t get to hear you sing much, but I heard from many guests that they were very impressed by the band. Think you should be getting some calls soon. Bravo on the french songs too! My in-laws were really impressed =)
Love
Xiangwen & Fred
Songs to Recommend:
Je T’aime, Je T’aimais, Je T’aimerais by Francis Cabrel (I Loved You, I Love You, and I Will Love You) – Don’t be misled by the monotonous melody of this chanson, the French love it because of its lyrics!
For All We Know by Carpenters: I can’t believe it’s my first time hearing this lovely classic!
