Imelda’s thoughts: I’ll Be There For You

For those of you around my age (you know who you are), you’d remember the movie “When Harry Met Sally”. Johnny and Sally’s wedding was very aptly titled “When Johnny Met Sally”. In the same cute and lighthearted fashion, the couple presented a photo montage depicting the story of how they met and got together. What I was really itching to ask Sally was, if Johnny was the slightest bit “Hairy”. But, I really didn’t want to be too corny on their big day.

During the briefing, I asked Johnny if they wanted a traditional roaring “Yam Seng” or a simple modern “Cheers” for their toasting ceremony. He wasn’t too sure initially but after I heard that he had 2 cartons of hard liquor prepared, I insisted he put the “Yam Sengs” to good use for a celebration of a lifetime!! 2 cartons of brandy along with stout, beer and wine is sure a lot of booze for a lunch wedding. But hey, this is a once in a lifetime celebration for this cute couple, so let’s drink and be merry!

As Johnny thanked his parents and brother during his speech, I could see tears of joy roll down their cheeks. Even his younger brother who used to stand up against bullies for big brother Johnny had to dab away tears. It’s really such a joy to see such a humble and close knitted family.

In Sally’s very well articulated speech, she announced that she now officially has 2 Johnnys in her life, her dad is Big Johnny, and well, husband Johnny is also Big Johnny. What a lucky gal you are Sally!

By the end of the luncheon, the groom was still surprisingly sober. Ein Ein, Reggie and I said our polite good byes to this lovely friendly couple, who really did live up to their bubbly sounding names. Johnny and Sally, I will always bear in mind these 8 Chinese words that you reiterated in your speeches – “相亲相爱, 相敬如宾”, to love and respect each other, the fundamental rule of thumb for any lasting relationship. May you always be there for each other, through thick and thin, good and bad. God Bless!
