Eleanor’s thoughts: Longer
Some nights are meant to be perfect. Despite the cloudy, threatening weather all day, the skies cleared and the stars shone as Simon and Cindy pledged their love to each other on a balmy evening in October. While an intimate gathering of family and friends looked on, they promised to spend the rest of their lives together and sealed their pledge with a kiss and a simple declaration, “I love you.”
These three words were to be repeated several times that night. In the middle of dinner, Simon seized the microphone and courageously strode up to his bride, singing a sweet love song without any accompaniment, and followed up his performance with a moving speech about what Cindy meant to him. In answer, Cindy, with tears in her eyes, reiterated simply, “I love you.”
It truly was a pleasure to perform at Simon and Cindy’s wedding celebration, as they and their guests were so welcoming. When I introduced the song, “Longer” by Dan Fogelberg, and shared with our attentive audience that it was a song with special meaning for me as it was the first song my husband had ever dedicated to me when we started dating, many guests applauded. I was surprised and touched at how warm they were.
Despite the humid weather and the relatively simple (but scrumptious!) buffet menu, the couple’s guests lingered over their wine, enjoying the simple pleasure of celebrating this happy occasion and catching up with friends and loved ones. It was really the perfect atmosphere for the occasion. I wish all weddings were like this one!
Congratulations once again, Simon and Cindy, and may those three simple words see you through any adversity, and fill every moment with joy and contentment.
