Juliet’s thoughts: So Nice
We’d all thought Raffles Marina was somewhere in town, till we found out it was authentic ‘by-the-sea’ kind of ‘marina’. 🙂 Unlike the usual hotel setup, Min Min and Chee Hiang had theirs by the sea, with all the yachts and the wide expanse of skies, with steady breezes. I do believe it helped put us in a rather light-hearted mood with a sustained bounce in our musical delivery after.

I must say I’ve yet to see another pair of lovebirds that sporting. They even managed to get the groom to kiss the bride’s, erm, side, during the games! We started the gig with their first march-in number, Fallen, done in a bossa nova style. After their solemnisation, we played So Nice for their 2nd march-in, and a few light-hearted numbers (Bubbly, What A Wonderful World, Dream A Little Dream) to kickstart the night’s buffet dinner.
It’s my first with a violinist and personally, unlike a saxophone, which is also a solo instrument, gives a very grounded, organic tone and nudging to the music, and I constantly feel like have a conversation with it.
If the saxophone is like smooth Cabernet Souvignon, the violin is like Merlot, and I enjoy that texture very much. Working with James and Shoujie for the first time, kicked off some really interesting vibes.
We had a lot of fun doing the standards, with each soloist taking our turns with improvisation, which I thought, gave the usual wedding delivery of jazz standards a bit of an edge.
We had fun too, with the popular ballads, such as How Do I live, and When You Say Nothing at all. My personal favourite is Stevie Wonder’s I Just Called To Say I Love You. The band gave it a modern twist which i felt was rather tasteful, and you could tell the crowd identified with the song when you had their nods and applause. 🙂
The couple came up to us, told us they enjoyed the music, and requested for a snapshot. The groom looked all flushed and the bride radiant from all that joy she’s sharing with her friends and family, and I remember thinking, this is a couple in love and they can’t wait to share this with the world.
