Hsin Yeow’s thoughts: Lady In Red

When Cheryl and Mingjie came to meet us, they were particular about one aspect of their wedding: the band must be able to handle songs suited for different styles of ballroom dancing!

When Cheryl first told me that, my head swirled with these exciting words, “Fox Trot, Waltz, Tango, Swing, Jitterbug, Cha Cha, Rumba, Salsa, Merengue…”

Turns out that Cheryl’s dad is an avid dancer, so he wanted the band to play songs that would allow him to tear up the dance floor.

Cheryl’s dad was also a talented orator. He took the stage and gave a brilliant speech that had us clutching our sides. In vivid detail, he described how Mingjie politely asked for his permission to date his daughter. (According to Cheryl’s dad, Mingjie’s first words to him were, “May I speak to you in confidence?”)

His parting advice to the couple was particularly memorable.

“My final advice to you is good for you, good for the government, good for Singapore; indeed it is good for humankind. It is Go forth and multiply!

Many other aspects of the celebration lingered in my mind, a few days after the wedding.

Swordbearers’ Challenges

Mingjie and Cheryl had to surmount three challenges posed by the swordbearers while walking down the aisle. Mingjie had to do more of the work though; from describing what he felt about Cheryl during their first meeting, to serenading her (with Aaron Kwok’s classic 对你爱不完 (Neverending Love), to reenacting the proposal. He even had to “sweep Cheryl off her feet and walk up the stage to cut the wedding cake!

Could I Have This Dance?

Bevlyn gave a note-perfect rendition of Anne Murray’s classic hit, which gave Cheryl and her dad the opportunity to dance together. Cheryl’s parents took the dance floor on two occasions during the dinner as well, and danced with abandon.

Cheryl and Mingjie’s first dance

While Mingjie shared none of the god-given talent as the famous celebrity sharing the same acronyn, he was game enough for a First Dance with Cheryl as we were singing The Way You Look Tonight. I was moved at the sight of the couple swaying gently to the music.

Congratulations Cheryl and Mingjie! It was a pleasure to perform at your wedding!

Hey Hsin Yeow,

Thanks so much for the help for our wedding. You guys played very well, and I enjoyed listening to all of you. The “Lady In Red” was a brilliant touch! I had friends telling me the band was good and I totally agree.

And the waltz was performed very well. Hope you guys had fun playing for us.

Thanks again! 🙂
