Ian’s Thoughts: Thank you For Loving Me

What a massive, massive wedding this was! Over 100 tables, I was told. Amongst the notable guests in attendance were the Minister for Law, and MP for Hong Kah GRC.
It was a night of two celebrations as the couple had chosen to wed on the same lunar date- only 56 years later- as the groom’s paternal grandparents. Beneficiaries of the family’s altruistic lineage were present to celebrate the new couple with plaques and gifts as the patriarch presented generous donations to representatives of several organisations, amongst them Ren Ci.

On the music side of things, it was a fresh change to be playing an all-english set, and I was working with Sofyan and Brad for the first time. Everyone was very well-prepared for this gig; Brad in particular, who didn’t need to be told when to come in and knew all the changes – cheers!

The couple had picked some difficult tunes for us this time! Guitar-driven songs I’ll Be There For You (Bon Jovi) and Fire (Bruce Springsteen) was an odd choice for a piano-saxophone combo. It was a challenge we grabbed by the horns and was nothing we couldn’t handle.

As an aside, I would like to thank the staff of Shangri-la Hotel events department (Veronica, Serene) for their swift action in locating and safekeeping my piano bench, which I’d left behind in the ballroom that night.
