Hsin Yeow’s thoughts: That’s Amore!
A day before the wedding, Dario and Dawn were watching the Olympics on TV. As they watched the Olympic winners at their awe-inspiring best, Dario turned to Dawn and said, “You know, I’m going to get my gold medal tomorrow!”
At that precise moment, Dawn turned to mush.
We had a fantastic time performing for Dawn and Dario. They trusted us implicitly, and made us feel completely at ease. The only request they made was that I attempt an Italian song, Una Canzone D’Amore (A Song Of Love). It was a challenge I relished, because I wanted to sing a song that Dario’s friends and family members would recognise.
Before I sang it, I got Dario to explain to all the guests what it meant. He said that it was about wanting a person finding it difficult to write a song of love, because the feelings are too intense (I hope I remembered it correctly!). After I finished singing the song, some of Dario’s Italians friends came up to pat my back and give compliments!
When it was time for the second set, the atmosphere hummed with electricity and excitement. I had given the audience fair warning that I expected them to get up and boogie, and they did not disappoint. Dawn and Dario gamely danced to Michael Buble’s Everything, and soon after, guests of all ages joined the couple to burn the floor.
As the guests became more relaxed, we had some unexpected singers. A choir in fact. A group of six or seven Italians came up to me, and asked if they could sing That’s Amore. It was one of the highlights of the afternoon, because they were bloody brilliant. Those guys belted out the song like mini Pavarottis, and clearly sounded like they enjoyed themselves. One of the guys even echoed certain phrases of the song in falsetto, just for the fun of it!
After that rousing performance, I made a surprise announcement. I spoke directly to Dario, “Hey Dario, I learnt to sing an Italian song for you. So now I ask you to sing a Mandarin song to Dawn!” The sporting groom agreed without hesitation, while the guests cheered in support. In less than five minutes, I taught him a few lines of the Teresa Teng classic,
月亮代表我的心 (The Moon Represents My Heart). Dario, seemingly unfazed by my challenge, even pretended to mouth the words when I started singing it. Dario’s contribution came at the end of the song:
(Think about it)
(Take a look)
(The moon represents my heart!)
Congratulations Dawn and Dario! Thank you so much for having us at your wedding!
